In Memory of Henri A. DemersSeptember 29, 1948 - July 23, 2022Henri A. Demers, devoted husband and father and brilliant trial attorney, has died. He was 73. He died after a courageous battle with a glioblastoma brain tumor on Saturday, July 23, in Long Island, New York. Henri was known for his quick wit and sharp sense of humor, his devotion to family and friends, his love of numerous pastimes including photography, the beach, and endurance cycling, and his unquestionable dedication to the law. Born in Fall River, Massachusetts, to Jean and Corinne (Lemaire) Demers, he attended St. Jean Baptiste elementary school and Prevost High School, both in Fall River. He received a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Assumption College in Worcester, Mass., in 1970 and a JD from St. John's University Law School in 1973. He married his college sweetheart, Meryl Cohen, in 1975 and moved to Rockville Centre, NY. When they welcomed their son Philippe into their lives in 1990, Henri became a devoted and enthusiastic father. Henri and Meryl were married for 47 years. Henri was a founding partner of the law firm Ahmuty, Demers, and McManus, based in Albertson, NY, where he practiced for over 40 years. He was a gifted and resourceful trial attorney who won the respect of fellow attorneys as well as adversaries and judges. He held the highest rating (AV) in professional excellence from Martindale-Hubbell ratings and reviews. Henri was also a mentor to many of the young attorneys in the firm. In addition to his wife Meryl, son Philippe and Philippe's significant other, Molly Reich, he is also survived by his sister Monique Waters and husband John of Estero, Florida; brother Charles and his wife Vivian, of Somerset, Massachusetts; sister Michelle and husband Michael Quaid of Williston, Vermont; and brother Marc and his wife Anna Brocato of Houston, Texas; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He also leaves behind brother-in-law and friend Mark Cohen and his wife Diane of Mattituck, NY; and brother-in-law Bill Cohen and wife Sara Jane, of Boulder, Colorado. A service of remembrance will be held at 10 am Saturday, July 30, at the Bellmore Funeral Home, Bellmore, New York.
