In Loving Memory Of Jerry MerzJuly 23, 1943 - July 9, 2023Jerry McCormick Merz, age 79, passed away at his home July 9, 2023 after a short illness. Jerry was born July 23rd, 1943 to Arthur Albert Merz and Violet Lee Merz in Anadarko, Oklahoma.He married Rosa Lee Seslar August 20th, 1967 after graduation from the University of Tulsa. Jerry completed his Masters of Science degree at Oklahoma State University while serving in the U.S. Navy. While in the Navy, from 1969 to 1972, Jerry served in the Man in the Sea Project using his training in physiology to pursue diving research.He received multiple letters of comments ration for his work on that project. He was also presented with a bronze plaque by his unit in recognition of his many contributions. After his service in the U.S. Navy, Jerry returned to OSU to pursue his Ph.D. in Cellular Physiology. After completion of his Ph.D., he continued to work at OSU in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as a Research Associate. During that time, he developed the Oklahoma Academy of Science website home page and was the first electronic editor of the Oklahoma Academy of Science Journal. He was also an active member of Sigma Xi, a scientific research honor society. He retired from OSU in 2007. Jerry was a talented photographer, computer programmer, amateur astronomer and an outstanding cook and baker. Jerry was a loving and devoted husband and father. He was loved and cherished by many.
