In Memory of Robert Eugene Mueller
November 25, 1956 - February 8, 2025 LaGrange, KY
Robert Eugene Mueller was a beloved son, brother, father, uncle, grandpa, pawpaw, teacher, coach, leader, artist, mentor, and friend. His gifts were many, his acquaintances were few because everyone he met became an instant friend. One of his greatest gifts was remembering people's names, something about them or their family, even decades later.
He was born to Theodore Eugene and the late Barbara Ann (Cummings) Mueller on November 25, 1956, in Louisville KY. He died February 8, 2025, peacefully surrounded by family after battling Glioblastoma for 3 years and 7 months.
Robbie received his undergraduate education degree from Transylvania University, and his Master's of Education from the University of Louisville.
In 1993 he married Susan Forbey and gained a beautiful daughter Angela Mueller whom he adored. Together, he and Susan had a son, Robert Tyler. In 2004 he married Mary Kathryn Grissom and gained sons Jason Kyle Daly and Michael Austin Daly.
Robbie began his teaching career in 1978 as P.E. Teacher at Crestwood elementary. He later transitioned to middle school science at South Oldham Middle School, and finished his 28 year career at East Oldham Middle School. During his teaching career, he also coached football, basketball, golf, and led Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Robbie loved teaching, the kids more than the content, and remembered his students decades later. But there was not enough time in a day to explore and experience his inquisitiveness and creativity, so retiring in 2007, Robbie set his sights on new adventures of woodworking and later art.
He was a self taught artist and Folk art quickly emerged as his niche as it allowed him to connect with people through its endless opportunities for expression. He used, wood, metal, paper mache, plastic, found objects, paint, tin foil, scraps, trash. . . There wasn't much he would see that he couldn't envision a way it could be used. Each unique piece was deeply personal to him as he hoped it would spark a memory or make a tender or humorous connection for someone. He believed his art was more of a story than merely something to look at. It was thoughtful, spiritual, creative, quirky, whimsical, and sometimes just plain weird. But that was Robbie, and why people loved him and his unique but easily recognizable style. His greatest joy was talking to his customers and hearing how they connected to a particular piece. It was always about a story.
During his art career he was recognized as a finalist for Oldham County's favorite artist for several years and served on the board of the Arts Association of Oldham County. He was a member of The Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen, and Kentucky Crafted Artist Program. His art has been featured in Gallery 104 La Grange, where he also taught art classes, The Berean Artisan Center, and KMAC Contemporary Art Museum in Louisville. He was also featured on an episode of KET Bluegrass & Backroads. He participated in art shows in several states and won numerous awards. In 2021 he was honored to be the first recipient of the Award for Excellence in the Arts Oldham County.
Robbie is survived by his loving wife, Mary Kathryn Mueller, father, Theodore Eugene Mueller, daughter, Ange and son-in-law, Jason Martin, son, Tyler and daughter-in-law, Kelley Mueller, son, Michael and daughter-in-law, Amanda Daly, grandchildren, Reagan (Andrew) Yoakem, Keelie, Zoe, and Cameron Martin, Layla and Luka Mueller, Madison Stewart, and Walker Daly, great grandchildren, Jase, Lainey, and Lucy Yoakem.
