Woman Awarded $820,000 in Memory Loss Case
(WJLA)
An Albemarle County jury awarded a Colorado woman about 820,000 dollars for
brain damage she suffered after undergoing neurosurgery by a University of Virginia doctor. Lawyers say 42-year-old Kelly McArthur's short-term memory and vision were damaged after Doctor Ladislau Steiner performed Gamma Knife radiosurgery in 1993. McArthur was diagnosed with a benign
tumor in the left side of her
brain near control centers for speech, memory and vision. She went to Steiner, a world-renowned neurosurgeon, who performed the high-tech procedure. But seven months later, McArthur's doctor said her
tumor worsened and that she had two months to a year to live. Two months later, another doctor treated her for
brain hemorrhaging and removed tissue that was killed or damaged by the Gamma Knife. McArthur, an assistant math professor at Colorado State University, sued Steiner in May 2000, sayin! g ! he performed an unnecessary procedure without informing her of alternatives. Steiner's attorney says his client believed he had given McArthur all the information she needed to make her decision.
