An old proverb says: “It’s better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.” And no one knows better how all enveloping that darkness can sometimes be, than those whose lives have been touched by a brain tumour.

So in an effort to light a firecracker, no less a candle, one of the International Brain Tumour Alliance’s (IBTA’s) inaugural projects is to launch an international logo competition at the ECCO 13 European cancer conference and Patients’ Programme from 29 October to 3 November in Paris, France.

Brain tumours spell “challenge” in any language, so the logo competition seeks not only to identify a suitable global symbol for the IBTA, but also serves to raise awareness of brain tumours around the world and promote an even greater exchange of information and cooperation among those in the global brain tumour community.

A distinguished international panel of judges comprising brain tumour survivors, carers and medical professionals has been appointed. The first run of 10,000 brochures is currently being printed for distribution in Paris. An additional large-quantity print run will follow the launch. One overall winner will be awarded a US $500 prize and the prestige of having his or her design adopted as the official IBTA logo. The competition runs until July 2006.

Copies of the logo competition brochure can be obtained in quantity from the IBTA in early November 2005. Reimbursement of shipping costs to the IBTA would be necessary, but there is no charge for the brochures.

Additional information about the international logo competition may be found on the IBTA’s website at www.theibta.org or by emailing logocompetition@theibta.org.
