Every year in the United States, more than 200,000 people are diagnosed with a brain tumor. There are over 120 different types of brain tumors, which can be malignant or benign, though either type can be just as serious or life threatening. Although brain tumors can cause profound physical and cognitive impairments, medical research and treatment options are offering greater results and hope for patients diagnosed with a brain tumor.
To honor local brain tumor patients, The David S. Zocchi Brain Tumor Center at Monmouth Medical Center and the Monmouth and Ocean County Brain Tumor Support Group are presenting “A Celebration of Survival” on Friday, June 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Monmouth Medical Center, 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch.
Featured speakers at the event include Sumal N. Raval, MD, a neurologist and neuro-oncologist and medical director of The David S. Zocchi Brain Tumor Center; and Todd Cooperman, MD, medical director of HealthSounth Rehabilitation Hospital in Tinton Falls.
Special guest at the event will be David M. Bailey, a renowned singer-songwriter who was diagnosed with a brain tumor that doctors said was not survivable and he would be dead within months. With this devastating news, Bailey left his job in corporate America and returned to his roots and first love of songwriting and performing. Twelve years later, David is a brain tumor survivor with 17 albums to his credit. His music continues to challenge all people to live passionately and treasure the beauty of each new day.
