Hi. We have just partnered with Genetech and 23andMe on an amazing project that I want you to participate in! This is ONLY for ADULT patients Living in the USA, with recurrent glioblastoma (and breast, kidney, colon and lung cancer) who use or have used Avastin starting before 12/31/12. Participation is by mail and over the web.
Basically: you swab your mouth with q-tip and send it in to 23andMe. They will generate your somatic genotype at no cost to you, which is yours to keep. You get free access to the 23andME website, where you can view your genotyope and see how your genotype may affect your risk for various diseases. You can also see where your ancestors came from and optionally find genetic relatives!
You then return to the website and fill out a few surveys to see how you are doing with the Avastin. They want to see if any of the million or so "SNIPS" of your genome coorelate with outcomes.
Here is where we come in: I also want you to join our Brain Tumor Virtual Trial project, which is a registry of brain tumor patients, the treatments they do and the outcome. I always wanted to add the somatic genotypes, but the expense was too high. However, this is a perfect opportunity. You can join both projects. They will pay for the genotyping, and then you can download the raw data, and upload it to our website. For privacy reasons, they are not allowed to give it to us directly - you have to download it and give it to us. Then we can analyze it not only for Avastin outcomes, but also for all of the other 100+ treatments we are watching!
With both projects, your genotype data will be coded so the people analyzing it can not associate your name with the genome data - they only get to see the raw data and the survey data with your name and address replaced with a patient number.
First, go to thier website to join: https://www.23andme.com/invite-study/ when you get a note telling you that your genome is ready, then join our project at virtualtrials.com/brain We ask you to fill out the initial history, then post an update once a month, and then upload your genome! Our website is not yet set up to accept the genome data yet but it will be by the time your genome is ready.
