This project involves a new material that can be 3-d printed into the shape of a bone flap, which can be inserted when the original bone flap created during a brain tumor surgery, can't be used (such as for infections or necrosis). This new material quickly transforms into real bone.

The Musella Foundation announced that it has awarded a $25,000 brain tumor research grant!
Hewlett, NY January 28, 2017 - The Musella Foundation For Brain Tumor Research & Information, Inc. (Musella Foundation), a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of families dealing with brain cancer, announced that it has awarded a brain tumor research grant to Dr Shabani and Dr Doan at Medical College of Wisconsin for the project "Development of a low cost vascularized integrated cranial bone flap to decrease risk of infection following cranial surgery". This project involves 3d printing of a new material that the body can transform into bone! It can be used when the bone flap created during brain tumor surgery gets infected or dies from avascular necrosis.
