New book takes a humorous look at brain cancer
CHASKA, MINN.—Cancerous brain tumors are not funny – unless you’re Kelly Rodenberg, who’s just published a book about her experience with glioblastoma. In “There’s Something Going On Upstairs,” she chronicles her diagnosis, disease and treatment at the Mayo Clinic with a good dose of common sense and sprinkles of laughter throughout.
An example: After her hospital stay, Rodenberg was inundated with food offerings from friends and family. “My husband never ate so well,” she quipped. She calls her fight against the tumor and cancer the “ultimate BOGO (buy one, get one).”
Glioblastoma is one of the worst cancers known to medicine. Most cancerous tumors are round balls, but glioblastomas have tentacles that spread throughout the brain. Like creeping Charlie in a lawn, little pieces can break off and find another path. While the doctors at Mayo were successful in removing 95% of Rodenberg’s tumor, she knows she’s not off the hook yet.
Rodenberg wrote the book in between bouts of chemotherapy and radiation, often typing with one hand because the tumor had affected her left hand. A share of the proceeds from “There’s Something Going On Upstairs” will benefit brain tumor research.

Kelly Fosso Rodenberg grew up on a farm in West Central Minnesota. She worked as an executive administrative assistant for several companies before glioblastoma forced her into “early retirement.” She lives in Chaska, Minn, with her husband, Bob.
