Heroes of Hope Race and Kids Fun Run to Benefit Brain Tumor Research

November 1, 2008-Playa del Rey, CA- The Brad Kaminsky Foundation for Brain Tumor Research, a global not-for-profit organization that is committed to raising awareness and funds for brain tumor research, and the Musella Foundation for Brain Tumor Research and Information, a public not-for-profit dedicated to speeding up the search for a cure, have teamed up with Dr. Linda Liau and UCLA’s Department of Neurosurgery to host the First Annual Heroes of Hope Race for Research on November 23, 2008 at Dockweiler State Beach in Los Angeles, CA. The race is a 5k/10k run/walk with a Kids Fun Run. Monies raised will benefit the UCLA Department of Neurosurgery, with emphasis on the promising brain tumor vaccine clinical trials that were featured on the “Stand Up 2 Cancer” telethon on September 5, 2008. KEarth Radio Station will be at the event which is sponsored by Genentech, NovoCure and the Hershey Company.

 

The Brain Tumor Program in the UCLA Department of Neurosurgery is dedicated to compassionate, multidisciplinary treatment of patients. Ranked among the Top 10 in the United States by U.S. News and World Report, this program is distinguished by state-of-the-art scanning techniques and surgical equipment for improved brain tumor identification and resection and pioneering clinical trials for intracranial gliomas. Under the direction of Linda Liau, MD, PhD, clinicians and researchers work side-by-side to make a difference in the fight against brain tumors. These investigators are on the cusp of discovery to identify permanent solutions to improving quality of life and finding a cure. Opportunities to advance knowledge of molecular biology, immunology, and functional brain mapping for brain tumor therapies have never been greater.

 

The Musella Foundation for Brain Tumor Research and Information, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity dedicated to helping brain tumor patients navigate their way through this nightmare. They run the “Clinical Trials and Noteworthy Treatments for Brain Tumors” website at www.virtualtrials.com which helps over four million people a year from over 200 different countries around the world. 

 

The Brad Kaminsky Foundation was started in 2000, by former La Jolla, CA resident Lisa Kaminsky-Millar after her 29 year old brother was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. He passed away in February, 2001. Kaminsky-Millar said, “Great strides in research have been made over the past two years. We need to keep that momentum going, so that we can find a cure. This will be an awesome day of Hope for the whole family!” According to Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and American Cancer Society statistics, brain tumors are the leading cause of solid tumor death in children and the leading cause of cancer death in men under 39.
